Stud Medicine

From Fertility to Foaling – We’re With You Every Step.

From fertility management and artificial insemination to pregnancy monitoring, foaling and neonatal intensive care, our experienced equine vets provide comprehensive reproductive services tailored to every breeding programme.

Successful breeding relies on expert veterinary care at every stage—from preparing mares for breeding to delivering healthy foals and supporting them through their first critical weeks of life.

Our ambulatory stud medicine service brings a team of four very experienced reproduction vets directly to your yard or stud farm. Whether you are breeding a single sports horse or managing a commercial Thoroughbred operation, we provide practical, evidence-based veterinary support tailored to your breeding programme.

A Complete Ambulatory Stud Medicine Service

Our experienced equine vets provide comprehensive reproductive and neonatal care throughout the breeding season, including:

  • Mare fertility assessments
  • Reproductive examinations and ultrasound scanning
  • Artificial insemination using chilled and frozen semen
  • Pregnancy diagnosis and routine pregnancy monitoring
  • Twin pregnancy detection and management
  • Problem mare investigations
  • Caslick’s procedures
  • Post-foaling mare and foal examinations
  • Foal health assessments and emergency neonatal care
  • Thoroughbred breeding and stud veterinary services

Our aim is simple—to maximise reproductive success while safeguarding the health and welfare of both mare and foal.

Artificial Insemination (AI)

Artificial insemination has become an integral part of modern horse breeding, providing access to outstanding stallions from around Europe while reducing the risks associated travelling mares and new born foals to stud.

Chilled Semen AI

Chilled semen offers excellent pregnancy rates when mares are carefully monitored throughout their cycle. Our vets perform regular reproductive ultrasound examinations to accurately predict ovulation, ensuring insemination takes place at the optimal time.

We work closely with stallion owners and semen transport providers to coordinate timing and maximise the chance of a successful pregnancy.

Frozen Semen AI

Frozen semen requires more intensive reproductive management but allows access to bloodlines that may otherwise be unavailable.

Based at of our farm in Comber, our experienced vets Kara and Gemma utilise intensive ultrasound monitoring and carefully timed insemination protocols to optimise fertility while minimising costs.

We are happy to discuss the most appropriate breeding strategy based on the mare, stallion and semen type.

Pregnancy Diagnosis & Monitoring

Early pregnancy diagnosis provides reassurance that breeding has been successful while allowing prompt identification of potential problems.

Routine pregnancy examinations include:

  • Early pregnancy diagnosis
  • Twin pregnancy detection
  • Twin reduction where appropriate
  • Confirmation of ongoing pregnancy
  • Monitoring pregnancies considered higher risk

Regular monitoring enables informed management decisions throughout gestation.

Problem Mare Investigations

Some mares require additional reproductive investigation before or during the breeding season.

Our diagnostic services include:

  • Reproductive ultrasound
  • Uterine cytology and culture
  • Endometrial biopsy where indicated
  • Assessment of uterine health
  • Investigation of repeat breeding mares
  • Tailored treatment plans to improve fertility

Every mare is different, and we work with owners to develop an individual approach based on history, examination findings and breeding goals.

Thoroughbred Stud Services

We provide dedicated veterinary support for Thoroughbred studs throughout the breeding season.

Our services include:

  • Routine reproductive management
  • Pregnancy diagnosis
  • Foaling support
  • Mare and foal health examinations
  • Neonatal care
  • Vaccination and preventative healthcare programmes
  • Emergency reproductive and foaling call-outs

Our ambulatory service allows us to work closely with stud managers, farm staff and breeding teams to deliver prompt, practical veterinary care throughout the season.

Foal Medicine

The first few hours of a foal’s life are critical.

Early veterinary assessment helps identify problems before they become life-threatening and gives every foal the best possible start.

Our neonatal services include:

  • Newborn foal examinations
  • Assessment of passive transfer (IgG testing)
  • Plasma transfusions where required
  • Treatment of neonatal infections
  • Diarrhoea management
  • Orthopaedic assessments and corrections

Prompt diagnosis and early intervention can make a significant difference to long-term outcomes.
